Polo Support Group

40 Goal Challenge

The Polo Player's Support Group, Inc. provides financial assistance to seriously injured or ill polo players and grooms.

Gary Rizzo's dad, Paul Rizzo, born into a polo playing family, had played polo since his childhood. He rose up in the ranks of professional polo players to earn a six goal handicap. He was known for his fierce drive to win and amazing athletic feats on horseback. Even after he broke his neck in a fall, he came back to play professional polo. He loved to win.

Then he was diagnosed with a particularly virulent form of colon cancer. He endured months of chemotherapy and radiation, with no effect. He underwent an eight hour operation to attempt to remove the tumor, with many more chemo and radiation treatments to follow.

Meanwhile, he changed careers and became a winning race horse trainer. He continued to work throughout his illness, astounding everyone with his successes. He also married his wife, Ella, and had a son, Gary.

Unfortunately, in March 2002, Paul lost his battle with colon cancer. The polo community and his family were devastated by their loss. The Polo Players Support Group has helped start a trust fund for young Gary's education.

Polo Players Support Group assistance is provided to players and grooms in need without charge. This is made possible by voluntary donations and fundraising events across the country.
