Leading

If you are leading a horse with a halter, grab the lead rope in your right hand 12 to 18 inches from the halter and hold the slack in your other hand.

Stand beside the horse's head and shoulders and say "walk". The horse should move forward with you. If it doesn't, try again with a little pull on the rope.

Never enter a tug-of-war with a horse, with 1,500 pounds and four legs, it's no contest.

Never wrap the rope around your hand. You can easily break a finger if the horse pulls away.

If you're leading a horse with a bridle, slip the reins off his head and hold them like a lead rope.

If you are leading a horse that has a saddle on, "run up" the stirrups so that they aren't hanging. This prevents the stirrups from banging on the horse's side or hooking on the barn door.
