Age and Gender Definitions
- Stallion
- Uncastrated adult male horse (4 years and older).
- Gelding
- Castrated (both testicles removed) adult male horse (3 years and
older).
- Mare
- An adult female horse (4 years and older).
- Colt
- An entire male horse (3 years and under).
- Filly
- A female horse (3 years and under).
- Yearling
- A colt or filly between 1 and 2 years old.
- Weanling
- Either gender between 6 to 12 months old after being separated from
its dam.
- Suckling
- A foal of either gender in its first year of life while it is still
nursing.
- Foal
- A newborn horse of either gender before weaning.
- Monorchid
- A male horse of any age that has only one testicle in his scrotum
because the other testicle was either removed or is undescended.
- Cryptorchid
- A male horse of any age that has no testes in his scrotum but was
never gelded (the testes are undescended).
- Ridgling or Rig
- A lay term used to describe either a monorchid or cryptorchid.
Year of Birth Tattoos
Thoroughbred horses are tattooed on the lip shortly after
they are born. The letter before the number indicates the year the horse was born.
