Thrush

Description

Thrush is an anaerobic bacterial infection in the frog of a horse's hoof, characterized by a foul smelling discharge and often resulting from unhygienic stall conditions.

Thrush can eventually cause lameness and significant hoof damage. However, in the early stages Thrush is simple to treat.

Symptoms

The first sign of Thrush is a foul smell and dark ooze from the cleft of the frog. Symptoms of Thrush may include:

  • Repulsive odor.
  • Watery or oily discharge often black in color.
  • Tenderness in the frog region.
  • Deep pockets extending to the heel bulbs.
  • Loss of frog shape.

Prevention

Thrush is anaerobic bacteria which cannot survive in the presence of oxygen. You can prevent Thrush by keeping hooves clean and allowing dry air to reach the tissues.

  • Keep the stalls clean and dry daily.
  • Use absorbent shavings.
  • Perform regular hoof maintenance.

Treatment

Treatment varies according to the severity of the condition. Use an over the counter remedy recommended by your Veterinarian or Farrier. Call your Veterinarian to administer medications and vaccines.
